VERY INCLUSIVE PEOPLE OF THE MONTH

Happy New Year friends! To kick off 12 months of high-lighting change-makers, January highlights Critical Resistance.

"Critical Resistance’s vision is the creation of genuinely healthy, stable communities that respond to harm without relying on imprisonment and punishment... As PIC abolitionists we understand that the prison industrial complex is not a broken system to be fixed. The system, rather, works precisely as it is designed to—to contain, control, and kill those people representing the greatest threats to state power. Our goal is not to improve the system even further, but to shrink the system into non-existence. We work to build healthy, self-determined communities and promote alternatives to the current system.

.

Their mission is "Critical Resistance seeks to build an international movement to end the prison industrial complex (PIC) by challenging the belief that caging and controlling people makes us safe.

THIS MONTH'S READ

9780593239919.jpeg

For this month's reading nook reco- I am sharing one of my favorite novels. This one is so good, even the “I don’t readers” will make it to the end!

"Americanah" is a beautifully written and insightful novel by award-winning Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

The story follows the lives of two young Nigerians, Ifemelu and Obinze, as they navigate their way through love, race, and identity in Nigeria and America. Adichie's prose is powerful and poignant, and her characters are fully realized and deeply human. Adichie offers a rich exploration of the immigrant experience, the African diaspora, the intersection of race and class, and the complexities of relationships across cultures.

Click here to buy “Americanah” from Cafe Con Libros- A Black and LatinX Intersectional Feminist Book Store based in Brookyln. *It is also one of my favorite spots in Brooklyn to stop in for a coffee- support your local businesses ok? ;)
